Catskills Vegan Guide

Whether you’re new to a plant-based diet or a veteran vegan, you’re likely familiar with the challenges dining out while traveling can present. Since my first visit to Narrowsburg, about 10 years ago, I’ve become vegan. While there were some excellent places to eat before I made the change, I worried that I wouldn’t be able to manage as fun of a visit afterwards. I’m happy to report, however, that when you are staying at Moonriver Inn you will be able to find some great vegan options in town and in the surrounding area.

I’m a frequent visitor to the Inn. My friendship with owner and operator, Celeste Evans, has allowed me to continually discover the town of Narrowsburg while staying in any one of the beautifully designed rooms. I feel very lucky that I can come up here from my apartment in Manhattan and stretch my legs, take a deep breath of fresh air, and get to know the area shops, restaurants, and residents. Below I have listed some of my favorite spots to visit that have great vegan options on the menu or at the market.

In addition to the rest of town, Moonriver Inn is very vegan friendly. Non-dairy milks and coffee creamers are offered in the common space downstairs. In each room there is a small fridge, an electric kettle, and Nespresso machine. So, if you want to stock up your in-room fridge with plant-based snacks there are a few markets within walking distance, or just a short drive away.

Area restaurants and cafes:

1. The Tusten Cup: This coffee shop is one of my favorite places to visit on Main Street, and about a 1-minute walk from the Inn. They typically offer two non-dairy milks, oat and almond. I love getting an oat milk cappuccino and a veggie bagel to start the day when I’m in town. The veggie bagel and the real maple oatmeal are the only truly vegan items on the menu, but they do offer other dishes that you can tweak. Along with the menu items are packaged snacks you can pick up. By the summer, The Tusten Cup will be relocating to a larger space across the street. With this move they will start offering a salad bar as well, expanding your vegan options here.

Address: 25 Main St, Narrowsburg, NY 12764

2. The Laundrette: This pizza spot is located on 5th Street and is still within walking distance of the Inn. There are excellent views of the river from inside and seasonal outdoor seating gives you an even closer view of the river. You might even spot an eagle or two while you dine. This restaurant is very vegan friendly. The menu offers vegan versions of most of their pizzas and there are gluten free options as well.

Address: 20th St, Narrowsburg, NY 12764

3. The Heron: A stylish, full service restaurant with another amazing view of the river. Call ahead to find out the vegan options on the menu, as they’ve recently been adding vegan dishes.

Address: 40 Main St, Narrowsburg, NY 12764

4. China King: located across the street from Moonriver Inn and open later than most restaurants in town. As always with Chinese food, be mindful of the animal-based stocks used in most dishes. But you can find some items on their extensive menu if you take some time.

Address: 225 Bridge St, Narrowsburg, NY 12764

5. China Town Kitchen Chinese: located in a shopping plaza a short drive, or about a 10-minute walk from the Inn. There’s always something you can find on the menu.

Address: 116 Kirks Rd, Narrowsburg, NY 12764

6. Tre Amici Ristorante Italiano: Located across the street from Moonriver Inn at the base of Bridge Street, this restaurant recently opened, is delicious and has several vegan options!

Address: 251 Bridge Street, Narrowsburg, NY 12764

1. Pete’s Market: Located in a shopping plaza a short drive away, or about a 10-minute walk from the Inn.

Address: 120Kirks Rd, Narrowsburg, NY 12764

2. Narrowsburg Proper: a shop on Main Street that offers Italian specialty items, among other goods. Some of the vegan items they offer are veggie prosciutto, hummus and other spreads and olives.

Address: 44 Main St, Narrowsburg, NY 12764

3. Jo Rob’s Naturals: A health food store that offers a small take-out menu. This is another great place to stock up on vegan goods. It is about a 15-minute drive away in Honesdale, Pa.

Address: 1130 Texas Palmyra Hwy, Honesdale, PA 18431

4. Narrowsburg Farmers’ Market: A short walk away, this farmers’ market will be open from 10am – 2pm on Saturdays from May 18th through October 26th.

Address: 7 Erie Avenue - Located behind The Narrowsburg Union

5. Callicoon Farmers’ Market: About a 20-minute drive from Moonriver Inn, this farmer’s market is a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon (open year

round). It is open from 11am – 2pm.

Address: 23 Dorrer Dr, Callicoon, NY 12723
